I want to try something different, which the new page explains (see Lights tab). I hope you participate.
FYI: A slight schedule change. The next post will be next Sunday (6th), not Saturday.

I like walking on the beach. It is good for the mind, body, and soul – and refreshing on my feet.
The previous walk was about light, but “light” is so much more than a luminary – therefore a reason for a second walk.
Light is a message from a messenger delivering the truth – for others seeing truth as in seeing the light, while others seeking answers search for the light.
Light is a metaphor for divinity – a spiritual illumination, enlightenment, a point of view.
Light is a leading person in a particular field or place – one who informs as an expert.
Light is a set of principles or standards.
Light is an expression in someone’s eyes indicating a particular emotion or mood.
Light is understanding a problem or mystery.
Light is an aspect, angle, slant, approach, interpretation, viewpoint, standpoint, context, and opinion.
Light is a descriptor of little mass, lightweight, low density, easy to lift or carry.
Light is a descriptor of quantity – as in a meal: small, modest, simple, easily digested.
Light is a descriptor of food – as porous, fluffy, low-calorie, not heavy, not too strong.
Light is as a taste – not sweet, not alcoholic, low in cholesterol, low in fats, low in sugar
Light is easy, simple, undemanding, even trivial.
Light is gentle, delicate, soft, faint, sensitive – a soft kiss.
Light is a comparative – light, lighter, and lightest.
Light for instruction and guidance – a guiding light, a lighthouse showing direction – the green light to proceed – the red light to stop – yellow to be cautious – but the area may be a red-light district.
Light is someone special who shines on your life.
Light is a descriptor of moods as in happy, easygoing, gentle, playful, carefree, lighthearted, upbeat, witty, free of worry, and happy-go-lucky.
We get ideas when the light goes on, which is helpful to cast or shed light onto something – but at the end of the day, some are out like a light while others like me are light sleepers.
Light on your feet is graceful, agile, quick, and nimble like Fred Astaire or Gene Kelly – but light-headed is different from light as a feather.
Light is something that exposes, reveals, or discovers.
We like those we see In a good light because they are the good, the positive, and the favorable in our eyes.
Light – that noun, verb, or adjective – a metaphor, analogy, and common idiom – therefore much more than a luminary and much more than I imagined. For me, this walk has been a delight to do and one causing me to smile. After all, I like walking on the beach because it is good for the mind, body, and soul – and refreshing on my feet.

PD,
Thanks for the kind words and for enjoying this walk. Because we use “light” in so many ways, when I was initially drafting the walk, I realized I had to have 2 essays. It seems to be working so far.

I must be being dense this morning. I can’t see the Lights tab to which you refer? Your thoughts are, as ever, comprehensive, Frank. Hope you’re having a good week.

When you think about it, light is used is so many ways – crazy! The Lights tab. Do you mean the one that I forgot to publish? Oh – that one – it’s up now! 🙂

Couldn’t find the LIGHT tab either but loved the post…….made me think about many things but for some reason the first thought I have is how many people conclude their messages with the words “Love and Light”……they are the same thing really. It’s a favorite combination for me.

Love and light is a good combination. Thanks for sharing. The Lights tab was tougher than any Tuesday Teasers because I forgot to publish it last night. That’s what I get for not scheduling a time. But it is up now.

I’m with you about what we refer to as divine light – especially over the water. The Lights tab was part of your morning scavenger hunt. Tough to find because I forgot to publish it 😦 … but it is up now. 🙂

You have shown me the light Frank! It amazes me that anyone can understand what we say when there are so many exceptional ways to say it. But then our language would not have the beauty and the diversity that it does if it were made up of single use words – monosemous.

Pam,
You are absolutely right. English is a difficult language to learn. Can you imagine using these examples in an English Second Language course? But yes – that is also part of our language’s beauty. Thanks for the wonderful thought!

I always was told that darkness defines the light. I think it is true whether speaking of the heart and soul or day and night… good post.

Because of their contrast, darkness defining light is is a good way to consider light. Thanks for sharing!

Outstanding walk, Frank! No wonder you needed to revisit “Light” — indeed, it has so many meanings and connotations. Who’d have thought a simple one-syllable word could convey so much meaning?!

Debbie,
“Light” is a good example of a word that not only can be used so many ways, but the listener must also understand it. I’ve already encountered problems with what I wrote on the Lights tab. Did you see it? Thanks for walking along!

‘Let there be light’.
Thanks for another inspiring post.
I love to watch the sky on a cloudy day, hoping for an opening to reveal a stream of sunbeams, breaking through to banish the gloom.
That happens in our hearts, too, with Spiritual Light.

Light is such a big word with so many meaning. Heck, theologians have written a lot about the meaning of “Let there be light.” Great point about spiritual light. 🙂 Thanks for sharing.

I have an ongoing list of *light* quotes so I’ll share one here. It’s from Love’s Labor’s Lost by William Shakespeare. “Light seeking light doth light of light beguile: So, ere you find where light in darkness lies, Your light grows dark by losing of your eyes.” Best of luck with your project. Looking forward to seeing what light you find.

In my writing I like to play on opposites: Light is one of my favourites. For light is opposite of dark… with all that’s hidden therein. But also the opposite of heavy, with hints of the grave

Your double light posts were of course enlightening (I didn’t read the other comments but am betting I’m not the first with that one). I really liked this one especially because I’d never thought about how many ways we use the word light as a descriptor for so many things. Enjoyed it immensely

Tina,
Glad you enjoyed this one so much and thanks for the kind thoughts. This one actually originated with drafting the other one about light. I recognized that light was too big for one walk – then subdivided it into two – one with a traditional view of light and this one. Yes – we use the word so many different ways, which also surprised me!

Light is quite a versatile word. So much so, calling it versatile may be an understatement. Didn’t Matchbox 20 fall off the map because the lead singer focused on a solar career? I’m not sure, just a thought.

Placing dark and light back to back was intentional, which was a relatively late idea. Glad it worked. Contrasting the two essays about light is am exteresting exercise (if you would like.)
