150 – World

Click the video above for 2 minutes of background waves while reading.

I like to walk on the beach. It is good for the mind, body, and soul – and refreshing on my feet.

I recently heard the following question: How would you describe the world to a young child? That’s an interesting question and one for me to ponder today.

The world is all the waves, the sand, the wind, and the clouds in the sky. The world is all the water in every sea and ocean, plus the water in every river, lake, pond, creek, stream, and waterfall. The world is all the mountains, hills, and flat land – plus the soil, rocks, and sand on every beach and in all the deserts.

The world is all the animals that live – the dogs and cats with people – the cows, pigs, horses, sheep, and goats on farms – the lions, tigers, giraffes, monkeys, and many more in the wild jungles and grasslands – plus all the fish, dolphins, clams, shrimps, and frogs in the water. Let’s not forget the bugs, ants, and worms in the ground – and all the insects everywhere.

The world is all the plants: the trees, bushes, grasses, flowers, and weeds – plus all the fruits and vegetables we eat.

The world is everything you can see and not see. All the things that you can touch and are unwilling to touch. The world is home to whatever moves and stands still – to what smells good and stinks.

The world is everything you hear – the crashing waves, the wind whistling in your ears, the sounds that birds make, the cars and trucks moving down the road, plus the banging of hammers and loud machines.

The world is everything that you can’t hear, can’t see, can’t touch, can’t taste, and can’t smell. That’s a world that bigger than we expect.

The world is all the people and where they live – plus the food they eat, the clothes they wear, the music they like, and the words they say. The world in the many languages of the world that people speak. The world is also all good things people do such as being nice and helping others, but also many bad things. The world is everything we like, plus the stuff we don’t like.

The world is all the people – everyone, everybody, everywhere. The boys and girls, sons and daughters, moms and dads, aunts, uncles and cousins, grandparents and neighbors, men and women, and people with different names, hair colors, and skin tones. The world is also all the people in the cemetery who aren’t alive anymore – but don’t forget all the babies who will be born in the future – including your kids.

The world is all the activities that people do – all the work, play, run, walk, sit, rest, and sleep. The world is the games we play, the places we go, the people we visit, and all the stuff not only in our house – but in every house. The world is all buildings like the tall ones along the beach – and all the stores, restaurants, schools, offices, and factories.

The world is a planet – the earth, a globe that is spinning in a very big space. Some would say that all those stars we see in the night sky are part of our world – but others say they are in another world. Maybe someone on a star sees our world as a small light in the night sky. The sun is in the sky and plays a big role in life – so is it part of our world? How about the moon?

People can be world-class, worlds apart, a man or woman of the world, lost in the world, be without a care in the world, or have the world by the tail, feet, or string while playing My Heart Bleeds For You on the world’s smallest violin.

We can think about the who, what, when, where, and why in the world while wondering what the world is coming to, or ask, how the world has been treating you? We can see the world and tell it to stop because we want to get off, but it takes all kinds of people to make the world go round and round. In a perfect world, we know each of us can make a world of difference because we know what love, respect, and being nice can do.

Whether in a first, second, or third world, look through the windows of the world to see all corners of the world and the best and worst the world offers. But before we leave this world, it is important to be at peace with the world – but be careful of promising the moon, earth, or the world.

When the weight of the world is on our shoulders, maybe we are not long for the world, dead to the world, or say, “Goodbye cruel world” before the end of the world. However, we can also be on top of the world where we feel good because the world of our dreams is leading us to step into a brave new world of doing a world of good. Then again, blogging has taught me that it is a small world, and niceness and respect go a long way.

Yes, the world is big and with so many things. Maybe the world is even more than people, places, and things. All over the world, people make a world of difference by doing a world of good – but others say this is only in an ideal world or a make-believe world.

We live in a big and wonderful world that is full of good and bad surprises. The world is so big, this walk only covers a small piece of it – but at least I tried. Maybe I’ll try again another time about the world because I like walking on the beach – and it is good for the mind, body, and soul – and refreshing on my feet.

      1. Yes, we need a break, but almost didn’t have one because we just joined in to help. We have to laugh at the irony. If the Texas sheriff can prove kidnapping or human trafficking the immigrants are automatically granted U Visas. Argentina is a warm country, except near the alpine village where certain Europeans settled in 1946, We think they won’t like the cold north so they’ll move south — wait for it — to Florida.

  1. Another immense subject, Frank! Today I hope not to have a care in the world. We’ll see, shan’t we? Looking through the eyes of a child is often amusing and always revealing. Thanks for your thoughts.

  2. The world is science meeting parody and having a beautiful child. And then we hope for the best, right? And to paraphrase Mick Jagger, if we try real hard, we get what we need.

This post was . . . wait for it . . out of this world, Frank.

And the song is a perfecto.

PS- Judge turned 60 last night 😉

    1. Marc,
The biological purpose of a child is to continue the species. Then, that child will eventually have to explain the world to their child. Meanwhile, in terms of this walk being out of this world, this is my best response …. wait …. tinyurl.com/2s3mru2n
I saw the news of #60 … and he should win the MVP!

      1. And then THAT child will have to explain Trump their THEIR child. . . and that is the end of the species as we know it . . .

        Ha! Of course!

And as of right this minute, Judge is a Triple Crowner. The BA is most impressive to me.

  3. A “huge” subject……each of us has our own world then there’s the bigger world of course. As I’ve aged my world seems to have become smaller in many ways. Not sure I can explain that but I guess we focus a little more on our “inner” world perhaps as our time in it shortens. I worry a lot about the larger world – but I also know it does a good job of surviving all the difficulties it ensures without my help and has for eons. There’s comfort in that.

    1. Pam,
Without re-reading it, I’m not sure if I included our inner world, so thanks for the addition. I agree – the world has gotten smaller in our lifetime. I first think about travel. Ships were the vehicles for the mass migrations across the world by immigrants going to a new land. Eventually, air travel made movement easier and faster … and then today we can add electronic communication. Just some thoughts. Thanks for stimulating them!

      1. And thanks to you for stimulating our imaginations and thoughts with the subject matter. Oh and I suspect you knew I meant “ENDURES” vs. “ENSURES”……I hate seeing things like that AFTER I hit “send” or “reply” !!

  4. I think of the song with the lyrics – “Make the world go away and get it off of my shoulders.” I sing that when the bad and unkind things mankind does on this earth weight heavy on my mind. I think it would be a little hard to explain the world to a small child.

  5. The world is us. What we see, think, feel, be. This moment, right here, right now. And the next second and the next second and the next second. I remember a song from so long ago that starts out “We are the World”. We are simply one part of a greater whole.

  6. Well done, Frank! Explaining huge, complex subjects to children (and even to adults sometimes!) is a difficult undertaking, but I’d say you’ve done a great job here. Must be the science professor coming out, huh?!!

  7. All that is here in this world is reflected in the mind – all the wonder and all the disappointment. As humans we have the capacity to take it in, stir it around and then pour it out. We manifest the world in our hopes and dreams as well as our actions and words. To know the world we must know ourselves and our neighbors…

  8. With each generation, the explanation will take more time, Frank. Our world is continually changing. Still, in many ways, I wish I understood more about my father’s world than mine.

  9. Depends on the age and understanding of the child, to give a literal response to your question, Frank, at least for me. If not, you could be in a world of hurt by explaining things the child can’t comprehend or can’t deal with. 🙂 And don’t forget we all want whirled peas. (Couldn’t resist. Really, didn’t try hard.)

  10. I am glad to be a teeny part of the whole of this world, and it is our/my home! This topic as you wrote down all your thoughts, made my head spin faster than world does as a planet. It is so vast and almost incomprehensible, but then we just have to keep on in our own tiny bit of the whole.
Our world – THE world – is a marvelous thing for sure!

    1. Ingrid,
Glad you appreciated this walk and thank you for the kind words. I agree – the world is so big and so much is going on, it’s difficult to wrap our mind around it – let alone trying to explain it to a child. Incomprehensible is a good adjective that I may have to incorporate if I decide to try a volume 2.

  11. My goodness, Frank. You took on a very large challenge when deciding to talk about the world. There is so much about the world that is delightful, awesome, inspiring and grand. And so much that is difficult and heartbreaking. And each of our lives is affected by where we are living and our experiences in the world. Even in commenting on your wonderful post I feel the limits of language! You did a great job!

  12. Re “All over the world, people make a world of difference by doing a world of good”

    That’s a misleading statement.

What most people really doing who are “doing a world of good” is what everyone else is compliantly doing. Guess where all that general do-gooding has been led to? A hugely polluted, destroyed, and degenerative world.

Clearly, your “equation” is faulty and wrong. An illusion.

The TRUE world we live in is the history of human madness, mainly thanks to the 2 married pink elephants in the room and has never been on clearer display than with the deliberate global Covid Scam atrocity — see “The 2 Married Pink Elephants In The Historical Room –The Holocaustal Covid-19 Coronavirus Madness: A Sociological Perspective & Historical Assessment Of The Covid “Phenomenon”” … https://www.rolf-hefti.com/covid-19-coronavirus.html
