I like to walk on the beach. It is good for the mind, body, and soul – and refreshing on my feet.
As I walk across the sand toward the waterline, I wonder about the sand’s depth. I’m sure someone knows, but I also imagine science has designated layers or zones of the sand. Each layer has its characteristics and conditions. After all, sand is a type of soil, and I know soil has designated layers.
I don’t know what sparked the question in my mind. Maybe it was last night’s lasagna dinner. Maybe that’s the clue that I need for today’s topic.

Layers are a coating, sheet, film, coat, zone, or stratum. Earth has layers: a crust, mantle, and multiple cores – each unique in composition.
As the water from a wave washes ashore and then back to the sea, I watch the next incoming wave, which seems to form a layer over the outgoing water. Yet, I can simultaneously feel the water from the incoming wave wash over my feet while the outgoing water removes the sand below my feet.
I look at the sea knowing it has layers based on depth and temperature. Glancing up at the sky, I think about the layers of the atmosphere, such as the troposphere, stratosphere, and ionosphere.
The day is cloudy. A thick layer of gray is blocking the sun, but the clouds are not enough to hide all the blue sky and white clouds, so I imagine the sun will appear sometime today. I notice the layers in the clouds: a layer of light gray and a layer of blue sky with patches of white clouds signifying another layer. My eyes shift to the horizon to find a deeper blue layer and a thick gathering of dark gray.
My eyes suddenly shift to the shells realizing their beautiful, natural designs and creations are layers of calcium carbonate made by a living thing.
I think about my science teaching days of examining cross and longitudinal cuts to illustrate and examine structures and layers.
I think about the layers of my skin with the newest skin cells lying well below the surface – and after doing their duty, flaking off my body into the environment. Let us not forget layers as tree rings visually marking annual growth or slicing a seed to see its different layers.

My science background shifts me to stratified rock formed by layers of sediment building up over time into visible layers. We can see different rock layers at the Grand Canyon or mountains cut by humans during road construction.
Archeologists have discovered ancient cities built as layers, so workers carefully uncover the remnants of the past. However, we know when it is time to clean when we notice a layer of dust in certain areas. On the positive side, many enjoy the layered petals of a rose because they touch the heart. Yet, its layers also provide complexity and intrigue.
I think about aspects of different layers in our lives. On days of varying temperatures, we dress in layers to allow the removal and addition of clothing based on changing conditions.
I think about layered food as lasagna that started this drivel – now add flakey filo bread, layers of an onion, artichokes, heads of lettuce and cabbage, and layered salads. We enjoy a stack of pancakes, parfaits of layered fresh fruit topped with whipped cream, Oreo cookies, tacos, and a multitude of sandwiches. Ever had a layered drink of specially selected liqueurs that will stay separated because of their density?
Let us not forget a cake with a layer of frosting on top and even something in the middle. I recall a cake my mother would make every few years: alternating layers of chocolate cake and fresh whipped cream – a cake that had to be refrigerated but tasted wonderfully even when served cold.

I think about a symphony orchestra with its many instruments working together to create music – beautiful tones woven together as layers of sounds as melody, harmony, rhythms, and accompaniment.
As I walk toward my building, I chuckle when I see it and others as a series of layers we call stories or floors. After all, I will soon enter the elevator and press the number of my floor.
Thinking about layers on this walk has been enjoyable, but I’m confident that I’ve only scratched the surface of this topic. Maybe another one will appear in the future. However, thinking and then transcribing thoughts into written words is a good mental exercise. Besides, I enjoy walking on the beach. It is good for the mind, body, and soul – and refreshing on my feet.

Shale is formed in layers and so is mica.
Beautiful pearls are made of layer upon layer of nacre…
A fugue is a musical form, composed in layers, and some are very complex…JS Bach wrote so many of them. (As did many other composers of that time.)

Besides, I new other excellent ideas would come from the comments in this essay – and yours are the first I’ve copied! My favourite beach has very shallow depth of sand. After a storm the tides tend to scour it away, leaving exposed the limestone bedrock. That’s great to walk on! Beneath that? Dinosaur bones!

Fascinating it is to me to ever expand our minds and our way of “seeing” in that what we once thought we knew we no longer do for we have added to the fore mentioned. The possibilities are endless!! Let’s see where my heart leads or what life has to add in order to guide me on my next post. That is usually how it works. To see in layers I honestly could take a bite out of that and not stop chewing. I admit I’ve got the bug to keep on learning and knowing more.

Thank you for the kind words. Peeling back the layers in life are many. Individually, there are many layers to each of us. Like layers of food, layers that provide different tastes. There is something sweet, savory, salty, sour, and bitter in all of us … and in different proportions. In terms of 2023, I see it will also provide many similar layers. After all, every year does that – but the question is what will be the dominant taste. Now that I’m uncertain. Thanks for sharing and enjoy your weekend.

Your layers are delightful and decadent, Frank – well, except for the earth and atmosphere. When I hear the term layers, I drift through various aspects of technology. Images are often built up by placing various elements into layers where they can be manipulated. CAD drawings are created in layers so you can strip away the roof and the walls and study the structure. When I wrote systems, I worked beneath the User Interface layer, first on the connections and then on the algorithms and finally on the data. Thanks for helping me remember that layers are not just for nerds.

So many layers to any relationship we have. We have many layers of moods, not to mention fantasies. Our dreams are layered and I believe our fears are too. Our priorities are certainly layered.
But lasagna and layered desserts are on the top of my list of “go to” layers!

Interesting thoughts…..life itself – as a whole – is full of layers isn’t it. We start out with thick layers that become thinner as we age and learn about life and what it requires of us…….as we get older and older the layers seem to become more thin – more translucent – until….one day….the layers disappear and our souls fly free. Hmm – interesting. I think I’ll make lasagna for dinner! LOL

I also think of the layers of the earth, and unfortunately, how they sometimes feel the need to “quake.” I also think about layers in our careers, how (hopefully) we start out at one level and work our way over the years up to another level, and maybe another after that, both in terms of responsibility and compensation. Enjoyed the walk, Frank!

Bruce,
Glad to know that I’ve ignited your culinary senses, so I will be curious to know how long you can avoid the urge for lasagna and cake. I like you adding earthquakes … and layers of careers … wow … good one. I’m transferring both thoughts into my notes. Thanks. An FYI: I have a sports-related post currently up at Sorryless.

Thanks for the tip on Sorryless. I’ll steer in that direction. I also managed to get lasagna on the menu for this weekend – Mrs. Chess is on the case!

Very funny thought that perhaps your inspiration came from your lasagna dinner. 🙂 You brought up many fine examples, and I particularly like that you mentioned music. I enjoy listening to the many “layers” in a more complex piece. There’s such art to putting all those layers together!

Debra,
Thank you. Layers seem to be everywhere …. and I imagine more essays about layers is in the future. Make sure you read Gibberish.

One of the things I enjoy doing when your blog post pops up is to think about the word before I read the post. Of course your thoughts are always deeply interesting, I always find myself nodding and smiling. With “Layers”, the first thing that popped into my head was children- the many layers of love that are necessary to grow up as a kind and caring person, the many layers of reading that are necessary to become a passionate reader, and a knowledgable person, the many layers of trying, persistence, and encouragement necessary for self esteem and self respect. I could go on.

Let’s not forget about the layers of human emotion we embody! I enjoyed your dissection of the word, Frank. 🙂

Susi,
Human emotion is a great one – and one that I should have included. I can say is that my drafts in progress for future posts include a walk on emotions, plus another one on layers based on reader comments. Thanks for your contribution and for walking along.
