226 – Easy

Click the video above for several minutes of background waves while reading.

I like to walk on the beach. It’s good for the mind, body, and soul – and refreshing on my feet.

I enjoy occasionally walking on the beach in the twilight of an approaching sunrise. The combination of the sky’s show, human inactivity, the waves, sounds, and the elixir of the fresh morning air is a great way to start a day. Regardless of the wind direction, I always walk east because I watch the sky.

The sky show is the best when a few clouds are in the sky. The approaching sun provides the orange glow on the horizon while treating the clouds as its kaleidoscopic medium to change the colors. I don’t recall ever seeing clouds aligning as the radiating ridges of a scallop shell. Although if only those lines pointed to the extra point where the sun would say hello.

While the colors and the clouds dominate the show, I wondered if Mr. Moon is still in the sky. I didn’t look far to discover its nearly half version high in the sky.

My pre-dawn walks are short – and the pace is more of a stroll or saunter.  The sand is smooth, firm, and not steep because low tide was a short time ago. I think easy is a good word to describe this walk.

I think easy is uncomplicated, not difficult, and undemanding – let alone simple, effortless, and trouble-free. During this time of day, easy is also calm, peaceful, quiet, relaxing, and serene.

Easy is my time as a snowbird – a time of being away from the normal routines of home – a time with fewer worries – a time serving my alter ego with the two most important questions of the day: Which way do we walk first? What’s for dinner?

Our life here is easy and free from daily problems – but worries still exist – so easy is feeling content while being safe and secure.

Being a snowbird is the time for the easy life. We know the music groups we want to hear and where they play. We’ve developed a group of snowbird friends from Illinois, Michigan, Iowa, Tennessee, Minnesota, and Nevada.

I believe that human nature finds it easier to be negative than positive – easier to be angry than calm – easier to complain than give a compliment – easier to tear down than to build up. Maybe that is why forgiving is not easy, and why asking for forgiveness is easier than forgiving.

Procrastination is easy for many of us, but that comes at the cost of the difficulty of getting it done later or not doing it well. Besides, we know encountering difficulty happens before it becomes easy.

I think patience is easy for some people but difficult for others. Although I believe experience teaches patience, most patience comes from our genetic wiring.

Easy can seem simple, but an easy answer may not solve the problem. The truth would be easy to understand if biases, beliefs, and misconceptions didn’t get in the way.

Easy is watching a pelican effortlessly glide high above – using the wind’s draft as if it was playing in its aerial park. Easy are the days when the waves resemble a little more than the gentle laps of a lake.

Easy is the flow of a beautiful Waltz or a smooth Foxtrot. There is something about those dances that look easy, but (believe me) they are difficult – so easy is a tribute to the quality of dancers who make it look effortlessly easy.

Easy can be as easy as 1-2-3 and A-B-C, but easy also is shooting fish in a barrel, falling off a log, or taking candy from a baby. Easy is easy peasy, easy as that, easy as child’s play, quick and easy, and easy on the eyes – but there are no easy answers or fixes unless you are looking for the easy way out.

We can take an easy ride down easy street in the Big Easy looking for easy pickings such as easy money, but life isn’t easy sledding or easy as pie. It’s easy to tell someone they gave up too easily, it hasn’t been easy, or easy does it – but others can get off too easy because it comes easy to them or they saw the easy fix. It can be easier said than done, but easy come easy go seems like an easy answer – but that may not make everyone breathe easy.

Because it’s so easy, we say easy come, easy go, and take it easy because we desire easy livin’ and to be easy as Sunday morning – but Ringo told us it don’t come easy – especially because it should be doesn’t.

A pre-dawn stroll is an easy way to start the day – and easy has been an enjoyable topic to ponder. This is a time and place to easily get lost and be swept away in the moment. After all, I like to walk on the beach. It is good for the mind, body, and soul – and refreshing on my feet.

  1. Well, that was a nice, easy start to my day, Frank. Sunrise on a beach and sitting on the dock of the bay- what more could I want? Love that group of juniors singing along. Many thanks for the link, hon. Enjoy your weekend!

    1. Jo,
As you know, I like these essays to have a relaxing flow to them – so thanks for reinforcing that. 🙂 I know you watch many of the videos, and I’m happy to know that it provided that easy, relaxing feeling. Enjoy your walk and concluding dessert today!

  2. The twilight of an approaching sunrise. Wow. I love that phrase. Loved your reflections on the concept of easy. Nothing comes easy, and the things that do always have a catch 🙂 And I love the thought that things that look easy are actually very hard. I saw a video of a man watersurfing on a surfboard that floats above the water, and it LOOKED easy but when you go back and watch the behind the scenes footage it’s insane how many times he tried and failed to achieve the skill! People that make things look easy sure do go through a lot of difficulty and that can be applied to all areas of life. Ease comes after hardship 🙂

    1. Lenora,
Greetings. Thanks for identifying a phrase that touched you. (I enjoy those thoughts.) Great point about easy and I agree. The highly skilled may make it look easy, but we forget how much time and effort went into achieving that skill level – and we can apply that thought just about to everything! I hope all is well with you … and I imagine your kids are growing each day!

  3. Good morning, Frank! Well, I know it’s NOT easy to put together blog posts, so great job with this. (Though I think that you mean clouds in the sky, not crowds. 😉). I agree some clouds in the sky make for better, more spectacular sunrises.

I imagine that life is sort of easy during your vacation time. I realize easy is not a word I use much, except for in relation to a recipe (or non-recipe).

    1. Merril,
MANY thanks for spotting my typo and letting me know. Corrected! And to think the number of times I’ve gone through this without spotting it. Yep, writing essays for a blog post definitely isn’t easy. Meanwhile, easy recipes are many of our go-to ones – and that’s what we take with us for the easy life of snowbird season. Ahhhh ….. 🙂

  4. Welp, easy come, easy go. So take it easy kids, the easy train is running late!

Juan Soto’s swing looks easy. The results are usually more complicated than that, for the pitcher.

I remember when Saturday mornings were easy, and getting mail, and watching baseball, and going to the movies with a couple bucks in my pocket.

    Lionel Richie was onto something.

    1. Marc,
Lionel was definitely onto something. The song is in my end this morning – but I didn’t use it because I thought Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay was a better fit for my mood in this post. As a golfer, some swings look so easy … especially Ernie Els and Fred Couples – while others look forceful. But what we forget about the easy looks in sports is that amount of work they put into it to reach that skill level. Kareem made his hook shot look easy. Teddy Ballgame’s easy swing of the bat …. and many more! …. and thanks for starting with a few idioms that made me smile! Enjoy your weekend.

      1. I feel that. Easy was . . . wait for it . . too easy, LOL. You need to go with the vibe running through you when you write something.

As for golf, my idea of a good outing these days is Top Golf. No running, hiking, swimming to retrieve my ball. And the long/short game . . I can’t.

Kareem’s shot, it was a perfectly crafted wonder. As for Teddy Ballgame? Arguably the greatest hitter to ever grace the diamond. He made hitting a science.

  5. Hi Frank, an intriguing post about easy. I’ve never found anything rewarding in my life easy to achieve. Getting a degree is hard work, raising a family ids hard work. Maintaining a relationship and marriage requires work, creativity is work.

    1. Robbie,

Not only do I agree with you about hard work involved in any achievement, but some say that life (in general) is difficult. Life itself takes hard work. Sometimes we are so troubled, finding relaxation is difficult. Therefore, the easy moments should be cherished.

  6. “Easy” sure is different when we are older that’s for sure! I LOOK more for “easy” these days than when I was younger – I could handle just about anything back then and now I look for the easiest way. Not because I don’t like challenges because I do but now what was simple to accomplish is less so…..I look for the EASIER way. You do learn a lot of shortcuts when you are older – they are more valuable to us…..easy is SOOOO appreciated.  Cool subject for a walk Frank.

As we now, life offers many lessons – and learning the easy way for something is humans do. Let’s face it, peeling a hard-boiled egg is difficult for some people – but once they learn the easy way, they are less frustrated. Then again, the easy way doesn’t guarantee perfection every time. Cheers to life’s lessons that make things easy! 🙂

  7. Frank, your description of the life of a snowbird sounds mighty appealing this morning (perhaps my mind is just overwhelmed with my To-Do List?!?) Anyway, what a nice, easy way to start my day, thinking of all the easy ways I can calm my restlessness and enjoy a (finally!!) sunny weekend!

Glad to know I provided an easy start to your day. Then again, you also realize I try to maintain the same tone throughout and across these essays. Meanwhile, snowbird life is wonderful – so when the time comes, I recommend trying it. Then again, I realize it’s not for everyone.

Glad you enjoyed the closing song and video. I thought it fit my theme very well. Plus, thanks for a touch of the Eagles, whose song is perfect for this essay. 🙂

  8. Several companies have used “easy ” as a memorable line. Currently Capital One is talking about easy decisions (Like choosing Barkley for a three person basketball game or Slash for your band’s guitarist). Staples advised us al to hit the Easy Button when it came to shopping for office needs. So trying to make things easy is a goal I think everyone could sign up for. Good post, Frank.

    1. John,

Good additions of “easy” as a marketing ploy. Then again, easy in the midst of life craziness is a good thing. ….. and oh …. I think I still have my Easy button! Now I’m wondering, but must check. Well, it I only knew where to look. But I have an idea.

  9. First I want to say that’s a great video and I love every photo you chose. You always make your posts seem so easy-peasy for you, but I know there’s a tremendous amount of work that goes into each one. Funny how easy it is to make something look hard, and it’s hard making something look easy.
I think we all strive to achieve an easier lifestyle, but we often forget how much time and planning and effort goes into making anything easier. That’s a real eye opener!
You addressed every kind of easy there is it seems, and that must’ve been hard. I can see where your time as a snowbird is much easier, more carefree, than ‘at home’ life. Less pressure. More freedom to hang out and relax with friends or by yourself.
Thank you for sharing this easy reading today. I hope you eased into this weekend easily and that next week is as easy as a breeze for you to get through.

Your comments always make me smile because you deliver good, thoughtful messages with a smile and a sense of humor!

Thanks for the kind words about this essay and what I do here. Yes, the essays may be easy to draft, but getting them post ready isn’t easy. Neither is finding a closing video. However, as you realize, I also aim for relative consistency across all the essays.

There is no question that life isn’t easy. Actually, I think it’s hard … and many aspects of life are also difficult. However, as I know you realize, the light goes on for many of us when we reach a certain age – and personal reflection may be the trigger. But wow …. I’ve learned to appreciate easy. Thanks for walking along and sharing.

  12. This was such a refreshing read, Frank. It sounded like I was taking a nice and easy walk with you along the beach. I do prefer sunsets over sunrises, but both are equally stunning. I usually don’t mind too many clouds in the sky as they can create a lovely vivid shades of colours as the run rises (or sets).

I agree with you that easy is simply. It is something that makes us feel good in what we are doing – not in a rush, but everything seems to fall into place. Very clever of you to incorporate differing thoughts on easy. Sometimes if it’s too easy all of the time, you may get bored and even want a challenge. Lovely to read your thoughts as you walk, Frank. Hope you have been doing well 😊

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I agree with having some clouds at sunrise and sunset can make a big difference in the show they provide … and it’s a great time for an easy stroll on the beach. Plus, in retrospect, it was the perfect time to think about easy as a topic.

  13. I like how you always delve into the complexity of words. As you always make me think of at least one song, this week it’s “Easy to be Hard” from “Hair”. And then there’s the Eagles via Jackson Browne who offer the good advice to “Take it Easy” Of course you covered some of that territory in your essay. Even though I only get to the beach once a year for a week, I agree, it’s a place where it’s easy to live easy (except when family tensions erupt). But in the end, Ringo is correct. 1. Kerfe,

Glad to know that these essays stimulate your thinking about different songs. After all, you’ve learned that sometimes I intertwine them into a paragraph. I thought about using a variety of songs with “easy”, but settled on the one because (in my opinion) it embodies the mood that was my focus. You mentioning “Take it Easy” reminds me that I have stood on the corner in Winslow, Arizona with a red flatbed Ford nearby. It is quite the iconic site to see. Meanwhile, I also only make it to the beach once a year – but fortunately for two months – which is the time I draft these essays.

  14. A fascinating word to contemplate. I find that sometimes when provoked it takes more effort to be easy-going than it does to react negatively in the moment. Meaning it’s not easy to be easy– which sounds like a Zen koan!

    1. Ally,

I agree with your statement – especially considering the complexity of human behavior. We definitely are complicated – and to think that also differs from person to person. Every one could probably use more Zen like moments! Thanks for sharing and take it easy.

  15. Not an easy word to write about but you manage it well. A somehow satisfying post that makes me want to take it easy. Snowbirds should take it easy and only have to decide between which way to walk and what to have for dinner.

Thanks for the kind words. As we know, easy has multiple meanings – and I mainly focused on the relaxed side of the word. Having a relaxed tone is important to me for all my essays, so for me, this one was much easier than I thought it would be. Maybe the time of day also helped. Meanwhile, I hope you can find some easy time for your day.

  16. A great post and follow up discussion, Frank – very enjoyable. “Easy” is a complex term. Mostly, it is defined as something that is not difficult or requiring much effort to accomplish. It implies that a task can be completed with little resistance, minimal complications, and without significant challenges. Ease suggests simplicity, straightforwardness, and a lack of complexity in achieving a particular goal or outcome. Life, on the other hand, is a complex journey filled with challenges, uncertainties, and unexpected twists. While some moments may be smooth and effortless, others can be difficult and overwhelming. It is a combination of highs and lows, victories and defeats, joy and sorrow. What makes life easy is the kindred spirits we meet along the way.

    1. Rebecca,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I especially appreciated your descriptors for life – complex, challenging, facing uncertainties (and surprises), and unexpected twists. To me, life is also hard, difficult, complicated, loaded with ups and downs, and much more. However, I tried to look at a different side of easy – the uncomplicated, the simple, the not hurried or strenuous, the peaceful, the easy going, and the relaxed. Those and more of also easy. Thanks for walking along.

  17. Frank, I think easy is a tough thing to quantify, because what one person considers a constraint, an obstacle, or a challenge, another doesn’t even think twice about it. Maybe that’s what easy is…when you do something that you don’t think about doing at all. It just is!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Bruce,

There is no doubt that easy is difficult to quantify – especially because it is different not only for each of us – but also within us depending on a laundry-list of circumstances. However, easy is also comforting, peaceful, simple, relaxed, and more – again, which is different for every person. Thanks for sharing (… and your Phillies are playing well!).

  18. your first few paragraphs transported me to an easier time. I could feel the sand between my toes, a gentle breeze touching my shoulder and lifting my hair off my face. I could smell the briny sea and wondered at the colours of the sky as a sun breached the horizon. Thank you so much for that. I would say that was an easy read but it stirred up so many thoughts and ideas and memories that it became complicated. And I loved it!

    1. Pam,

Thank you so much. I don’t think I can express the right words describing how much your comment means to me. Thank you. Knowing that I also triggered memories made me smile. Describing the environment of that early-day walk was important (for me) to establish the environment for the topic (Easy). Of course, a relaxing tone is important for all of my essays, I think the time of day made this essay easier to write. 🙂

still…natures offer though taken for granted at times…helps when we learn to appreciate…and still it’s never easy…life as we call it. 🤍
